ANNUAL APPEAL
A bit less than a year ago we approached you with a similar appeal. In these days we have just established the Interfaith Encounter Association, and didn't even manage to start our activities. It needed a lot of faith from you to have confidence in us and to donate to our activities and development. Yet, many of you did have the trust in our vision and did donate to us. We are deeply grateful to you for that as these donations enabled us to start our activities in December 2001. We are also extremely thankful to the European Commission and the United States Institute of Peace for their grants that made so much possible.

Since then we succeeded in organizing more than 30 programs that attracted more than 800 participants. The most active section is the Women's Interfaith Encounter that had some 15 study-sessions and one two-day retreat and created two on-going groups - one in Jerusalem and one in the north of Israel, and plans two more: in the center and south of the country. The second active section is the Youth Interfaith Encounter with 8 study-sessions and two on-going groups in formation - one at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and one at Ben Gurion University in Be'er Sheva and plans for two more - in Tel Aviv and in Nazareth. We also had two general study-sessions, two Desert Seminars, a new model that was developed this year, and two Israeli-Palestinian conferences. One of these conferences was a special achievement as it was the first face-to-face such conference, that was open to the public and took place in the Holy Land itself, since the break of violence over two years ago. Another achievement was a Middle Eastern conference that took place in Berlin, Germany during the difficult times of April 2002. As a result of all these we were recognized lately by UNESCO as an organization that is contributing to the culture of peace and an actor of the global movement for a culture of peace, a UN initiative. The Interfaith Encounter Association is also a Multiple Cooperation Circle of the United Religions Initiative, a Member Group of the International Association for Religious Freedom and members in the Goldin Institute of the Parliament of World Religions.

We now approach you again with this appeal to help us finance the further development and growth of the Interfaith Encounter Association and its activities with any amount you can. Any contribution you make will be gratefully welcomed and help directly to make a real addition to the building of true coexistence and human peace in the Holy Land. Below, you will find some suggested options for donations and the ways in which you can make your donation.

We are extremely thankful for considering this appeal and will deeply value any contribution. We want to take this opportunity in order to wish seasonal greetings to our Christian friends and a very happy and successful 2003.

Help IEA Supply the "Missing Ingredient" to Make Peace Possible

As we write this, polls show that more than 70% of those who live in the Holy Land want this week’s summit in Annapolis to succeed, but tragically, most think that it will not. Yet all who wish a better future for those who live in the Holy Land are asking ourselves what we can do to help give peace a better chance.

Like Annapolis, previous attempts at making peace have largely focused on political and economic steps taken by governments. So far, these efforts have not borne fruit. At IEA, we believe that in addition to the political and economic realms, it is necessary to emphasize the human side, finding ways to speak to and tap the deep cultural roots of each people, and catalyzing them to know, respect and befriend the Other. Our success has lent powerful proof to the idea that religion, which so often divides and inflames, can also serve as a potent unifying force. We see this as the key missing ingredient in peacemaking efforts – we must forge direct, human connections between those of different faiths in order for the top-down efforts of governments to be able to succeed.

At IEA, we are especially proud of the fact that so many of those who take part in our programs have met the "Other" for the first time at our events, and also of the fact that those who attend come from all parts of the political spectrum and all parts of the religious/secular continuum. Unlike some other dialogue organizations, we don’t just involve a limited and perhaps unrepresentative sample of each religious group in our peacemaking efforts. And our distinctive, non-political method for interfaith encounters, in which study of sacred texts and ideas reveals shared values and the common humanity that is so often masked by conflict, has created bonds among our over 4000 participants which foster deep respect and understanding for differences as well. Each encounter has a ripple effect, reaching not only participants themselves but family and community members. In this way, IEA is creating the conditions for peace to finally come. All of our participants – the grandmother from East Jerusalem, the high school student from Tel Aviv, the professor from Ramallah – know that their chances for a brighter and safer future critically depend on the success of efforts such as ours.

To see IEA’s work in action, you can now watch our short documentary about a real-time interfaith dialogue between a Jewish and Muslim community – click here.

Despite ongoing repercussions from last summer’s war between Israel and Lebanon (indeed, in some ways because of them) IEA had an extraordinary year in 2007, expanding substantially the number of ongoing dialog groups and conferences that we run, and reaching more people than ever before. We are poised for even more growth in 2008, but we can’t do it without your help.

Those who take part in our programs know that despite the barriers and stresses and very often personal risks in participating, they cannot allow themselves to walk away from dialogue, because their lives here in the Holy Land depend on finding a way – creating a way – for all of us to live together. We, and they, are depending on you to help build a better future for all of us, because what happens in the Holy Land powerfully affects how those of different faiths relate to each other the world over.

If everyone who reads this message can give just $30, we will be able to continue with our work for the next year. But please consider helping us to grow by giving even more, so our encounters can reach even more people at this critical time.

Your donation of:
$30 – covers printing and communications costs for one encounter session
$60 – buys food for one encounter session
$100 – pays for transportation for Palestinian youth to come to Israel for an encounter session
$250 – allows us to retain trained coordinators of one encounter session
$500 – covers all the costs for one Palestinian and Israeli Youth Encounter
$1,000 – pays for one conference
$5,000 – can sustain one ongoing dialogue group for one year.

You may help IEA build the human side of peace, one encounter at a time, by donating online (see above).

In the US, contributions by check may now be mailed directly to: Friends of IEA, 7 Lancaster Ct., Ramsey, NJ 07446-2114.

We are very happy to announce that we have been granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS, so all contributions are now fully tax-deductible in the US, as well as in the UK and Switzerland.

PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO THE INTERFAITH ENCOUNTER ASSOCIATION. SUPPORT ONE OR MORE OF OUR PROGRAMS AND JOIN US AS A MEMBER IN WORKING FOR INTERFAITH UNDERSTANDING AND PEACE.

All contributions are welcome, small and large!
