Women's Interfaith Encounter

WIE October 2007 Meetings:

October 2007 was a month blessed with holidays for our Jewish and Muslims members. Particularly women, from all traditions, are very busy during this period organizing the festivities and preparing all the delicacies served at these happy events.

Therefore the WIE did not have the regular monthly meeting at the STI. But we did meet during this time at two special occasions, getting to know each other's traditions during this holiday season.

1) Tuesday October 9th, 2007: Iftar Break-the -fast dinner at Saheer Siam's home.

We were about 12 WIE members, Jewish, Muslim and Christian, happily sharing the Ramadan Iftar break-the-fast dinner at Saheer Siam's home. Saheer, her family members and friends prepared all the delicious traditional dishes and desserts for the holidays.

It was a warm, friendly and family like gathering, a wonderful way to get closer to each other and to learn about our Muslim sisters traditions. We talked, laughed together, and enjoyed each other's company while sitting around the beautifully set table covered with Ramadan specialties.

2) Friday October 26th, 2007: Shabbat traditional dinner at Evelyne Savir's home

We were fortunate to host two Christian ladies, Agneta Nordin, free lance journalist and Ewa, her accompanying photographer both from Sweden as guests for a traditional Shabbat dinner at Evelyne Savir's home. The Jewish, Christian and Muslim ladies arrived in time for Shabbat's traditional prayers done by Uri Savir, Evelyne's husband. Thus all of us shared the prayer on Halla (traditional bread for Shabbat) and on the vine's fruit. All tasted the traditional grape juice or wine for the occasion. Evelyne prepared a festive traditional Shabbat meal, enjoyed by all. We all gathered around the table in the Jewish tradition and Ewa took many pictures of this very special evening. Most guests, Christian and Muslims said it was the first time they shared a Shabbat meal at a Jewish family's home . Many questions about Jewish traditions were raised and discussed. The Swedish guests, very thankful for this unique opportunity to see coexistence in this area, promised to send us the article and pictures about WIE in Jerusalem.

N.B. We were very happy to have Rose Naber's - our former Christian coordinator -presence at both dinners!
